How much does a CA (chartered accountant) earn in India in 2020?

Earnings of a CA solely depends upon his Work profile, Reputation and Network.

Still if you want figures , i will give you some .

In Case of Job,

Working in small CA Firm, starting 20k-30k , later on 40k-50k is maximum they can afford .

Eventually , you will get a better job or if you are smart and dedicated you will start your own practice .

Working in Big 4 and Top CA firms . Initial 4–5 years , you will be paid between 6–18 lpa.

Later on , your growth depends upon how quickly you can show your ability to lead the audit assignment and handle big clients . Here , experience matter a lot . And money comes from the client for whom you work. So you are paid accordingly.

Always remember , just because you are a CA , that does not mean you have become eligible for high paid job. You command high salary because of a position you create for yourself in the whole ecosystem. If you are replaceable , you will not get good salary, if you are indispensable , you will command your remuneration at your own terms .

Working in Industry for established Listed Companies like Reliance , Bharti , Infy , TCS, Wipro , Nestle, ITC , HUL, JIndal group , Dabur Group etc list is endless. Life is set now , provided you are having work life balance . If working environment is such that there is 14hr working , no saturday sunday , you will give up soon. Packages can go from 6 to 60 anywhere in a span of 10–14 yr of career .

Starting as a Sr executive to AM to Mgr to Sr Mgr to DGM to GM (Finance Controller). You are on a high growth trajectory now .

Working in Medium size companies - 4 to 24 in a span of 10 years , with lot of Job switches , untill you reach a reputed big company .

Working abroad in Canada , USA, Australia , Singapore etc. There starting packages is 40–50lpa because cost of living is like that and it can go till 1.5–2cr . Living expenses for a couple is near about 25–30 lpa.

Starting your Practice / Coaching / Trading Business - Whatever you do , if you do it with whole dedication and passion , after 8 years , you should reach atleast 20lpa and on upper side there is no limit. But remember , if you dont get break early , then life could be a hell for initial years , as people will judge you and try to demotivate you . This is most toughest path , but i have rarely seen anyone still having bad phase after 8 years .

In the end , i would like to sum up like this

  1. Initially focus on building skills , knowledge, experience , network and reputation.
  2. For a CA , his reputation is everything for him, money is secondary . Money will follow automatically if you are respected in your social network .
  3. When you start your career , have patience for atleast 8 yrs , either in Job or in practice or in any sort of business .
  4. Stay humble .
