Is Chartered Accountancy overrated in India?

Let me tell you a secret

Becoming a Chartered Accountant is really hard.

Don’t take my word. Read this quote written by a Chartered Accountant out there. You can easily feel the pain and the difficulties behind those words

But what good is life without Reasons. So i will give you the best reason in the form of a story.

.

.

Let us consider a character named Ramesh.

Ramesh i just a normal guy who has enrolled in a private coaching centre to prepare for his CA exams.

He starts preparing for three months and attends the Entrance exam for CA. With a good pass percentage, Ramesh clears the entrance and is now ready for the intermediary exam.

.

After some months of studying, Ramesh is now ready to take on the intermediary exams. This is tough, but all thanks to his hardwork for the past 6 months, he passes this too with flying colours.

.

Ramesh is now at the most difficult stage on his journey to becoming a Chartered Accountant.

He has to undergo a rigorous training for three years to complete his articleship.

I will tell you why this step is the hardest.

Ramesh will be working for 12–15 hours each day

Ramesh’s payment will be in the form of monthly stipends

The stipend can range anywhere from 1000 rupees to 15,000 rupees

and finally

Ramesh will need to get the recommendation of the firm to get his CA degree

on top of all this

Ramesh will need to work under immense pressure while taking his classes for CA final on the side.

Do you love this story so far ?

If so, feel free to check this answer. It is something similar.

Sumit Agarwal's answer to What is the salary of a chartered accountant?

Back to Ramesh now

With the amount of work they do, Ramesh has a high chance of learning more than the highest paid employee in the company ( if he doesn’t slack off ). He will need to work day and night over a number of client projects and multiple things to get paid peanuts for his efforts.

So my answer is.

I am a proud Chartered Accountant and i don’t think it is overrated in India.

And if Ramesh ever becomes a Chartered Accountant, you can ask him about the sleepless nights and anxiety attacks he might have got with the stress in his Articleship.

I hope that struck a Chord.

P.S : I used the name for representational purposes. It is not be connected with any real world characters.

Hope this helps
